Pregnancy Care
Complete prenatal care including routine laboratory work as well as ultrasound screening if desired and/or needed. The first prenatal visit is typically 2 hours in length with subsequent visits 1 hour in length. Emphasis on nutrition and wellness as well as time to explore thoughts and feelings as each woman travels through her pregnancy and prepares for the birth.
Birth
Homebirth services include labor support, birth of the baby, and care of the postpartum mother and newborn. Assistance with initiating breastfeeding is provided. The first newborn exam is performed.
The midwife arrives at the home when the laboring woman desires her to be present for labor support. The birth assistant arrives when the midwife calls her, typically once the laboring woman is in active labor. The birth assistant is trained to assist at a birth, including certification in newborn resuscitation.
During labor and/or birth if medical care is needed the midwife will consult with the physician and accompany the laboring woman to the hospital where she will provide support and advocacy during labor and birth, while continuing responsibility for care for the labor and birth will be provided by the admitting physician.
Postpartum and Newborn Care
Two home visits on the 1 st and 3 rd days postpartum, for both mother and baby, as well as a 6 week postpartum visit for mother. The newborn metabolic screening is obtained on the day 3 visit. Ongoing support of breastfeeding as well as evaluation and management of breastfeeding concerns, including treatment of breast infections that may occur with breastfeeding.
Preventative Health Care - Gynecological Care
Preventative health care exams - complete physical exam including breast and pelvic exam and pap smear. Provision of family planning methods including the IUD (intrauterine device), birth control pills, the mini pill, and all other methods. Screening and treatment of vaginal infections and urinary tract infections. Pregnancy testing and/or physical exam to confirm dating of pregnancy. Screening and treatment of sexually transmitted infections.
Midlife Women's Health Care
For the midlife woman the preventative health care exam may additionally include referral for an annual mammogram, osteoporosis screening, and screening laboratory work such as diabetes screening, blood lipids (cholesterol), and anemia screening as well as hemoccult testing (blood in stool) and/or referral for screening colonoscopy.
